Four things that decide whether your paragliding flight goes up.
Nobody fails a tandem flight for lack of skill. Flights get moved for other reasons, and all four are worth knowing before you pay.
- 01Your weight sets the limit
- A tandem wing is certified for a total load, so operators publish a passenger window, often around 20 to 110 kg. Check the figure on the listing before you pay.
- 02The wind has the final say
- The pilot decides on the day. Too strong, too gusty or a front on the way and the flight moves to a later slot or the next morning. Book early in the trip to leave room to re-fly.
- 03Dress for the launch, not the beach
- Take-off sits hundreds of metres above town and the air up there is cooler. Closed shoes with grip for the run, long trousers and a light jacket, even in July.
- 04No licence, a few running steps
- You get a short briefing, run with the pilot until the wing lifts you, then sit back in the harness. Landings are on your feet or on your seat.

In Rio the launch is a wooden ramp on Pedra Bonita, around 500 metres above São Conrado, and you run off it strapped beside the pilot under a rigid wing. It flies faster and quieter than a paraglider, and the landing is on the beach.
